MODULATION

Design study included:
  • Album artwork
  • Procedural animation
  • Structural visual studies
  • Material exploration

This exploratory study began as a commissioned visual direction for an album originally titled Underworld. Although the project is unpublished, it became an opportunity to investigate how gradual harmonic movement could be translated into a continuously evolving procedural form.

The music for Modulation built tension through sustained harmonic movement and gradual shifts in intensity. I wanted the visual system to adopt that same underlying behaviour. The object remains recognisably the same throughout, while continuously adjusting its internal state through subtle changes in structure, density and curvature.

Audio input was introduced into the procedural framework, allowing hundreds of parallel elements to move together and creating a surface that continuously redistributed compression, expansion and subtle changes in curvature. The system took its behaviour from the music itself, translating gradual modulation into a changing visual state.

Developing the artwork as a procedural system made it possible to observe the behaviour of the form over time before selecting individual frames for further refinement as album artwork and hero imagery. The accompanying studies document that process, revealing the underlying geometry, material development and continuous modulation that defined the investigation.
